
Time Out for Reading
(A literacy awareness campaign)
You are invited to help make Northwest Indiana a reading community! On October 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., everyone in Northwest Indiana will be asked to stop what they are doing and read! Time Out For Reading will focus community awareness on literacy. Across Northwest Indiana, thousands of youth and adults will stop what they are doing to "Put Their Nose in a Book" and read.

Time Out for Reading
Purposes:
- Bring together many groups, organizations, and individuals across Northwest Indiana for purposes of supporting literacy and embracing reading as fundamental to literacy
- To emphasize the importance of reading and literacy.
- To provide an opportunity for Northwest Indiana leaders to model the importance of reading.
What Will Happen:
- Business, government, school and organization leaders will be caught with
their noses in books.
- Through advance planning, encouragement and directives by top leaders,
all other populations of each organization (unit leaders, department supervisors,
principals, and employees/ members) will also be reading during the same
time. These people will be following their leaders' examples and at the same
time will be setting an example for their families, friends, etc.
- School children throughout Northwest Indiana will be reading at the same time.

Communities across Northwest Indiana
What:
All individuals throughout the community will participate simultaneously in
a reading activity wherever they are at 10:00 a.m. on October 3, 2008.
Activities include independent silent reading, group reading or reading
aloud by a leader.

Kick-Off Event
Participants wear Red Noses to support the Time Out for Reading EventYou are invited to participate in the Kick-Off Event and free continental breakfast. Details are being developed. Join with other friends of literacy and community leaders to prepare for Time Out For Reading campaign.
- Hear remarks by school, government, university, and library officials, and Hammond
Business Leaders.
- Pick-up free red noses and bookmarks for use on October 3rd as you, your employees,
etc. "put their nose in a book".
- Gather ideas on what can be done at your business, office or organization location to
observe Time Out For Reading. All organizations observing Time Out For
Reading on Ocotber 3 will receive special recognition by
the Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition.
- Learn how you can help make Hammond a reading community!
Feel free to bring a co-worker, friend, or family member to the Kick-Off. Reservations are not required. However to assist in our committee's planning, you may RSVP by calling 933-2419.
